This is what we used to treat the new raised beds. There are more expensive natural wood treatment products, but some research showed that ferrous sulfate heptahydrate is the active ingredient in one of the most popular. This size bag goes a long way.
The wood will look weathered within a few minutes to a couple days after application, and become resistant to moss, mold, wet rot, dry rot and fungus. This isn’t a coating or a finish, so it won’t peel off. As a matter of fact, you may even wonder if you’ve done anything at all until the wood starts changing color. Goes on like water; cleans up with water, and can be applied with a simple garden sprayer. Dilute 1/4 cup to a gallon.
You’ll notice this product doesn’t have any particular directions associated with it, because its used for a variety of purposes. We’ll be using it as a non-toxic wood treatment on all our outdoor wood projects around the farm.
